A collection of things found on the internet that I find amusing, genius, ridiculous or simply beautiful.

My kids are starting to notice I’m a little different from the other dads. “Why don’t you have a straight job like everyone else?” they asked me the other day. I told them this story: In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, “Look at me…I’m tall, and I’m straight, and I’m handsome. Look at you…you’re all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.” And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, “Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.” So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.

I feel like David OReilly is someone who just gets bigger and bigger, yet still manages to remain human.  I really admire that about him.  One of these days it would be nice to sit down with him over a beer or two.  I’m not the biggest U2 fan, but my first impression of this video and it’s subtleties is very good.  Teamed up with designer Jon Klassen, it makes a gorgeous visual paired with some heart string moments.

I’m really enjoying it when I see what other people are doing with the Stratastencil look.  Even if it’s just in after effects, it still has a nice motion graphics appeal.  Alexander Perry has done a music video using the concept, and he did a great job of exploring some avenues that I’d been curious about.  Visual representations of musical cues, Selective usage of the outermost negative space, and Free Floating objects to name a few.
